These units were sold nationwide by various retailers and JC Penney for approximately $50 to $100.
The recall addresses a potential failure in the product's safety interlock system, which may allow the machine to operate without the bowl cover in place. This defect creates a risk of severe lacerations to hands and fingers, or partial finger amputations, if a user pushes the "on" button while their hand is in the bowl near the cutting blades. Regal has received 17 reports of finger or hand lacerations and 4 reports of partial finger amputations from 1982 to February 1986.
Owners should discontinue use of the affected machines until a replacement bowl cover is received. To determine if a unit is affected, owners should check the bottom of the machine for the specific model numbers and date codes listed in the recall notice. Regal is offering to replace the original bowl cover with a new one designed to reduce the chance of accidental removal. Owners can request the free replacement by writing to Regal Appliance Inc. at 2820 Crusader Circle, Virginia Beach, Virginia 23456, including their name, address, and the machine's model and date codes.
