Plain-English summary
Century Products, Inc., and Product Source, Inc. are recalling the Crib Cuddle infant hammock in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. The product is a yellow hammock made of soft terry material with a plush pile center and a red heart-shaped, battery-operated pulsator. It is suspended from crib side rails using six straps. Approximately 109,000 units were distributed starting in 1982. Product Source sold the item under the Infacare trade name from March 1982 to May 1983, while Century Products distributed it under the Century name starting in June 1983.
The recall is being issued because the companies and the Commission are aware of one death and two near-misses involving babies under two months of age. In these incidents, infants were found with their heads over the edge of the hammock. The hazard is identified as a risk of fall, which in this context implies suffocation or strangulation.
Consumers should immediately stop using the Crib Cuddle and discard or destroy the product. Replacement products are no longer available. Consumers can identify Infacare-branded units by a small white tag sewn onto the hammock. For additional information, consumers may call the company's customer service number at 800-345-4109 or the CPSC toll-free hotline at 800-638-CPSC.
