In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Peoples Drug Stores, Incorporated, is recalling certain Model CYHD-103 nine-inch oscillating fans sold under the APL, Snow, and King brands. The fans were sold in 1982 and 1983 in Peoples, Lane, Haag, and Reed drug stores located in 14 states and the District of Columbia. A total of 6,366 fans may still be in the hands of consumers. The fans were manufactured by Chin Yung Ho Enterprises Co., Ltd., in Taichung, Taiwan, and sold for approximately $20 to $25.

The recall is being issued because the 2-speed control switch may fail, causing the motor to overheat and potentially igniting the motor case and other plastic parts of the fan. Although no injuries have occurred, four fan fires have been reported, three of which involved the King brand fan in 1982. Some Snow and APL brand fans were previously recalled by Peoples in 1982.

Consumers should stop using the affected fans immediately and return them to the nearest Peoples, Lane, Haag, or Reed drug store for a full refund. If returning the fan in person is inconvenient, owners may call Peoples at 703-750-6875 for instructions on shipping the fan back. Consumers who purchased similar Snow or APL brand fans from other retailers should contact those retailers or the CPSC to determine if their specific product is recalled.
