General Electric (GE) is recalling its 1983 nine-inch portable 2-speed oscillating fans, model F1-OF-9A, in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The recall addresses a potential overheating problem that may occur if the speed control switch fails to function as intended. This malfunction can cause the fan to overheat, creating a potential fire hazard.
GE estimates that approximately 2,100 of the 11,000 fans sold to consumers may have this issue. While no injuries have been reported, GE has received 18 reports of overheating or damage to furniture surfaces caused by the melting of the plastic case surrounding the fan motor.
Owners of these fans should stop using them immediately, unplug the unit, and not attempt to disassemble or service it themselves. Consumers should check the model number on the bottom of the fan base to verify if they have model F1-OF-9A. Affected owners can call the GE Answer Center at 800-626-2000 (ask for Dept. 25) for a free replacement with a twelve-inch model. No other fans or products are involved in this recall.
