Plain-English summary
The General Electric Company, in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), is voluntarily recalling certain GE brand and Universal brand drip coffeemakers. The recall involves units manufactured between 1976 and before April 28, 1984. The hazard exists because a purchased thermal fuse in the coffeemaker may fail to function as intended, presenting a potential fire hazard.
GE has received approximately 400 reports of coffeemakers overheating. Allegations state that one fire caused by a fuse failure resulted in two fatalities and serious personal injury to eight other people. Additionally, claims suggest fuse failures may have been responsible for fires resulting in one additional death and 15 personal injuries. Approximately 375 claims involve property damage ranging in value from $300 to $1.3 million.
To determine if a unit is affected, consumers should check the date code number stamped on the outside metal blade of the electric plug. If the number is 418 through 600, the coffeemaker is not involved in this recall. Space Maker Drip Coffeemakers (catalog numbers including SDC1, SDC2, and SDC3) and Percolators are also not involved. Owners of recalled units should unplug the unit and stop using it immediately. The recalled coffeemakers are not repairable. Consumers can call toll-free 1-800-443-9000 for instructions on arranging a convenient pick-up. GE is offering owners $10 for each recalled unit returned.
