Plain-English summary

Black & Decker Household Products Group, in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, is voluntarily recalling approximately 750,000 SDC 1, 2, and 3 under-the-cabinet automatic drip coffeemakers. These units were manufactured between February 1984 and May 1988 and carry either the Black & Decker or General Electric brand name. The affected models have date codes ranging from "406" through "822" located on the outside of the plug prong. No other coffeemaker models or products from these manufacturers are involved in this recall.

The recall is being initiated because the affected coffeemakers contain thermostats that could present a possible fire hazard. Black & Decker examined returned units and found that approximately 75 showed signs of thermostat damage. Additionally, about 45 consumers have reported property damage claims, ranging from product impairment to residential fire damage. Two consumers have claimed to have been subject to smoke inhalation.

Consumers owning these specific coffeemakers should bring them to their local Black & Decker Service Centers for inspection. Products found to contain the affected thermostats will be repaired free of charge, or consumers may purchase a new coffeemaker at a 70 percent discount. Units that do not contain the affected thermostats will be returned to consumers. Consumers can call (800) 231-9786 to locate the nearest service center.
