These fans were imported in 1983 and sold by Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. in approximately 20 southern and midwestern states for about $20.
The recall is due to a defective 2-speed control switch that may cause the fan motor to overheat and ignite the plastic motor case. Seven fires involving this fan were reported in 1983 and 1984, though no personal injuries have resulted. The CPSC is concerned about the risk of fires occurring at night or while users are asleep.
Consumers should stop using the recalled fans immediately. Wal-Mart is offering a full refund for fans returned to any of its 693 retail stores. Consumers who purchased the fan from other retailers should contact those retailers or the CPSC to determine if their product is affected. Fans can be identified by the "Snow" brand name on the blade guard, the model number CYHD-103 on the metal plate, and a vertical sliding 2-speed control switch.
