The recall involves AMF Voit carbine models sold nationwide from 1967 to 1979 and Sears private-label models sold between 1970 and 1973. The hazard is that the guns may contain defective triggers that allow them to fire accidentally even when the safety catches are engaged.

Approximately 97,300 units are estimated to be affected, with 1,400 of those sold under the Sears label. AMF Voit has received 13 consumer complaints regarding this malfunction, but neither CPSC nor the company has received reports of deaths or serious injuries. Models G-6 and G-7 manufactured since May 1979 are not included in the recall and can be identified by a serial number on the handle or barrel.

Consumers who own the affected models should disassemble the unloaded spear gun handle assembly from the barrel by removing the connecting screw. The handle and the spear shaft should be mailed to the nearest AMF Voit outlet listed in the official notice for free replacement parts. Postage costs will be reimbursed if mailed by insured fourth-class parcel post with a return receipt requested. Consumers should not return the gun barrel, spear point, or shock lines. Sears stores nationwide will also accept returns of the Sears-labeled model for modification.
