C & S Trading Co. is voluntarily recalling model 100 "Magic Curl" hand-held curling irons in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The recall was announced on May 1, 1978. The affected devices feature a chrome-coated heating element and a yellow swivel handle. Thousands of these units were sold nationwide between January 1978 and November 1976. The model 100 "New Magic Curl" curling iron with a white handle is not included in this recall.
The defect involves the handle casing, which can separate after a short period of use. This separation allows sparks to be emitted, creating a possibility of electric shock or burns. CPSC staff is aware of five burn incidents and one shock accident related to these curling irons. The recalled irons are packaged in purple and gold or blue and gold cardboard boxes with "Professional Curling Iron, 'MAGIC CURL'" displayed on two sides. Two stickers on the swivel handle identify the product, one with the manufacturer's name and address and the other with technical specifications.
Consumers are urged to immediately stop using the recalled curling irons. They should return the devices to their dealer or mail them to C & S Trading Co. at 138 East Savarona Way, Carson, Calif. 90746, for a free replacement and reimbursement of postage costs.
