What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a banned hazardous substance (lead) in a product intended for children, which fits the rubric criterion for risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported.
Plain-English summary
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Pride-Trimble Corp. announced the recall of certain tubular steel bed guard rails. The product, designed to prevent children from rolling off beds, was found to contain paint with approximately 0.61 percent lead. This exceeds the permissible limit of 0.5 percent for items intended for use by children, classifying the product as a banned hazardous substance under the Federal Hazardous Substances Act.
The recalled rails were manufactured between January 1, 1974, and May 1, 1976. Approximately 45,305 units were sold, primarily in states east of the Mississippi, Puerto Rico, and in Oklahoma, Arkansas, Kansas, Minnesota, Iowa, and Missouri. The product is identified by cartons marked "Model 112 Bed Rails" and further labeled "Dept. 66-112-6222 quantity 1 (one) tubular steel bed guard rail adjust 40" to 70"". The rails feature three horizontal tubular steel bars that telescope from 40 to 70 inches in length.
Consumers who purchased these specific bed guard rails should stop using them immediately. They may obtain a replacement or refund by returning the product to the place of purchase. The lead contamination was identified after the State of Connecticut analyzed paint removed from one of the units.
