Scout Kid's Bike Helmets Recalled for Head Injury Risk

Retrospec is recalling Scout model kid's bike helmets due to inadequate impact protection that violates the federal safety regulation for bicycle helmets. About 72,000 units sold between February 2019 and March 2023 are affected.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: This is a risk-of-harm product (protective equipment with safety regulation violation) where head injury is possible but no injuries have been reported. Per the rubric, risk-of-harm products score at most 3 when injury has not yet been reported.

Plain-English summary

Xander Bicycle Corporation, operating as Retrospec, is recalling Scout model kid's bike helmets in sizes XS and S sold in multiple colors including Matte Black, Matte Blue, Matte Green, Matte White, and Matte Pink. The helmets fail to meet the federal safety regulation for bicycle helmets, posing a risk of head injury.

The recalled helmets were sold nationwide and online through retailers including T Scheels, Play it Again Sports, independent bicycle stores, Retrospec.com, and Amazon.com from February 2019 through March 2023 for between $18 and $23. About 72,000 units were sold in the United States, with an additional 150 units sold in Canada.

No injuries or illnesses have been reported. Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled helmets. To obtain a refund, consumers must destroy the helmet by cutting off the straps, mark the helmet with their initials and date near the Retrospec logo on the right side, photograph the destroyed helmet, upload the photo to the recall registration page at https://retrospec.com/pages/retrospec-scout-recall, and then dispose of the helmet.
