Generac Portable Generators Recalled for Fire and Burn Hazards

Generac is recalling about 64,000 portable generators because the fuel tank can fail to vent properly, causing excess pressure and fuel expulsion that poses fire and burn hazards. Generac has received 27 incident reports, including three with severe burn injuries.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall meets the Severe criterion because there are reported injuries—specifically three incidents resulting in severe burn injuries. This places it in the Severe category even though no fatalities were reported.

Plain-English summary

Generac Power Systems Inc. is recalling Generac Portable Generators, specifically the GP15000E and GP17500E models, due to a fuel tank venting defect. The recalled generators' fuel tank can fail to vent adequately from the rollover valve, causing the gas tank to build up excess pressure and expel fuel when opened.

About 64,000 units were sold nationwide through major home improvement and hardware stores and various websites from April 2011 through June 2023, priced between $3,300 and $3,650. Affected model numbers are: GP15000E (G0057341, G0057342, 005734R1, 005734R2) and GP17500E (G0057351, G0057352, 005735R1, 005735R2).

Generac has received reports of 27 incidents of the generators overheating and pressurizing or expelling fuel when opened, including three incidents resulting in severe burn injuries. Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled generators and contact Generac for a free repair kit.
