What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The source explicitly reports 24 finger amputations, which constitute significant injuries. While no fatalities are stated, actual amputation injuries reported place this at Severe (score 4) per the rubric criterion for "significant injury reports."
Plain-English summary
Generac Power Systems is recalling about 321,160 Generac® and DR® 6500-watt and 8000-watt portable generators. The recalled unit types include XT8000E, XT8000EFI, GP6500, GP6500E, GP8000E, PRO 6500M, PRO 6500E, and HomeLink 6500E models, including units purchased after July 29, 2021 through November 3, 2022.
The generators have a U-shaped, two-grip, flip-up pin-lock handle used to move the unit. An unlocked handle can pinch consumers' fingers against the generator frame when the generator is moved, posing finger amputation and crushing hazards. The firm has received a total of 37 reports of injuries, 24 resulting in finger amputations and 5 in finger crushing.
Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled generators unless the locking pin has been inserted to secure the handle in place before and after moving the generator. Consumers should contact Generac toll-free at 844-242-3493 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. CT Monday through Friday, or visit www.generac.com/handlespacer or www.generac.com for a free repair kit consisting of spacers to move the handle away from the frame. Customers who responded to the original July 2021 recall will automatically receive a new kit.
These generators were sold at major home improvement and hardware stores nationwide and online from June 2013 through June 2021 for between $790 and $1,480.
