Bulk Apothecary Recalls Wintergreen and Birch Essential Oils for Packaging Defect

Bulk Apothecary is recalling Nature's Oil Wintergreen and Birch Essential Oils because the packaging is not child-resistant, posing a poisoning risk to young children.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product (poisoning from methyl salicylate) where injury has not yet been reported, which aligns with the 'High' severity criteria in the rubric.

Plain-English summary

Bulk Apothecary is recalling approximately 20,240 units of Nature's Oil Wintergreen and Birch Essential Oils. The products are sold in amber glass bottles with black caps and silver metal cans with white caps in various sizes, including 10 mL, 15 mL, 60 mL, 473 mL, and 2.25 L. The essential oils contain methyl salicylate, a substance that requires child-resistant packaging under the Poison Prevention Packaging Act (PPPA). However, the recalled products' packaging does not meet this requirement, creating a risk of poisoning if the contents are swallowed by young children.

The products were sold at BulkApothecary.com and Amazon.com from January 2016 through May 2020 for between $4 and $550. No injuries or illnesses have been reported in connection with this recall.

Consumers should immediately store the products in a safe location out of reach of children. To obtain a full refund, consumers should contact Bulk Apothecary toll-free at 888-728-7612 from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, email [email protected], or visit www.BulkApothecary.com and click on 'Recall Alert'.
