Edens Garden Recalls Wintergreen and Birch Essential Oils for Packaging Defect

Edens Garden is recalling Wintergreen and Birch Essential Oils because the bottles lack child-resistant caps, posing a poisoning risk to young children.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product (poisoning) where injury has not yet been reported, which aligns with the High severity criteria.

Plain-English summary

Edens Garden is recalling approximately 8,200 units of 100% Pure Wintergreen and Birch Essential Oils. The products are sold in amber glass bottles with black caps in 5 mL, 10 mL, 30 mL, and 4 fl. oz. sizes. The recall is due to a failure to meet child-resistant packaging requirements under the Poison Prevention Packaging Act (PPPA).

The essential oils contain methyl salicylate, a substance that requires child-resistant packaging. Because the current packaging is not child-resistant, there is a risk of poisoning if the contents are swallowed by young children. The company has not reported any injuries or illnesses associated with the product.

The products were sold online at Edensgarden.com from May 2018 through April 2020 for between $6 and $70. Consumers should immediately store the product out of reach of children in a safe location. Edens Garden is contacting known purchasers directly to offer a free replacement child-resistant cap. Consumers can also contact Edens Garden toll-free at 833-301-5639 or visit www.edensgarden.com for more information.
