What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a fire hazard with reported incidents of sparking, smoking, and melting, which aligns with the rubric criterion for 'significant injury/property-damage reports' or high-risk fire hazards, warranting a Severe classification.
Plain-English summary
Johnson Health Tech North America, Inc. is reannouncing a recall of approximately 3,000 Matrix Fitness Ascent Trainers and elliptical machines. The recall was initiated because moisture from user perspiration or cleaning liquids can accumulate in the power socket, causing a short circuit that poses a fire hazard. The company has received 11 additional reports of sparking, smoking, shorting out, and melting at the power cord and socket, in addition to 44 incidents disclosed in the original 2014 recall. No injuries have been reported.
The affected units were sold to commercial fitness facilities, such as health clubs and military facilities, nationwide from November 2011 through December 2012. The machines are black and silver, with "Matrix" printed on the body and handlebars. Affected units have model numbers beginning with A-3x, A-5x/7x, or E-3x/5x/7x, and serial numbers beginning with EP304, EP306, or EP308 with date codes of 1208 (YYMM) or prior.
Exercise facilities should immediately unplug the machines and contact Johnson Health Tech North America to schedule a free repair. The machines can be used in self-powered mode without being plugged into an electrical outlet. Johnson is contacting purchasers of the recalled ellipticals directly. Consumers can also contact the company toll-free at 866-218-3674 or visit www.matrixfitness.com.
