Vitamix Recalls Ascent and Venturist Blending Containers Due to Laceration Hazard

Vitamix is recalling Ascent and Venturist series blending containers because they can separate from the blade base, exposing blades and posing a laceration hazard.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product (laceration hazard) with reported injuries (11 lacerations) but no reported deaths or serious injuries requiring hospitalization, fitting the High severity criteria.

Plain-English summary

Vita-Mix Corporation is recalling Ascent and Venturist series 8-ounce and 20-ounce blending containers. The recall involves containers with blade date codes of March 2018 ("03-18") or earlier. The hazard exists because the containers can separate from the blade's base, exposing the blades and posing a laceration hazard to consumers. Vitamix has received 11 reports of lacerations when consumers' hands came in contact with the exposed blades.

About 105,000 units were sold in the United States, and about 5,300 were sold in Canada. The products were sold at Costco, Williams-Sonoma, and online at www.vitamix.com from April 2017 through July 2018. The blending containers have a clear container and a black blade base. The blade date code is laser-etched onto the top of the blade in the blade base. If the blade base is marked on the bottom with a green or orange dot, the container has already been repaired.

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled blending containers and contact Vitamix for a free repair kit. Vitamix is sending repair kits to consumers it can identify. For more information, consumers can call Vitamix toll-free at 888-847-8842 from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. CT Monday through Friday or visit www.vitamix.com or www.recallrtr.com/blender.
