Keenford Recalls iMoto Hoverboards Due to Fire and Explosion Risks

Keenford Limited, of Lynbrook, N.Y., is recalling about 84,000 iMoto brand self-balancing scooters, commonly known as hoverboards. The recall involves three specific styles: the iMoto Smart Balance Board (model no. M1A1), the iMoto Smart Balance Board 2.0 (model no. M2A2), and the iMoto Smart Balance Board SUV (model no. M3A3). These products were manufactured in China and sold at retailers including Macy's and The Athlete's Foot, as well as online at imotohk.com and hoverboard360.com, from September 2015 through December 2015 for between $400 and $600.

The recall is due to a fire hazard. The lithium-ion battery packs in these hoverboards can overheat, posing a risk of the products smoking, catching fire, and/or exploding. There have been six incidents reported of sparks, overheating, and short circuits with the recalled hoverboards. No injuries or property damage have been reported.

Consumers should immediately stop using these recalled products. They should contact Keenford Limited toll-free at 877-280-8401 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or online at www.imotohk.com or www.hoverboard360.com, to exchange their hoverboard for a refund in the form of store credit or a free replacement hoverboard certified to comply with UL2272.
