Plain-English summary

Swagway LLC is recalling approximately 267,000 Swagway X1 Hands-Free Smartboard self-balancing scooters, commonly known as hoverboards. The recall involves units sold in the United States and 5,000 units distributed in Canada. The affected products feature two wheels at either end of a platform and are powered by lithium-ion battery packs. The Swagway brand X1 hoverboard has "Swagway" printed on the front and is available in gold, black, blue, green, red, pink, or white.

The recall is being issued because the lithium-ion battery packs in these self-balancing scooters can overheat, posing a risk of the products smoking, catching fire, and/or exploding. There have been 42 incident reports of the battery packs smoking, catching fire, or exploding. These incidents include 16 reports of injuries, such as burns to the neck, leg, and arm, or severe property damage.

The recalled hoverboards were sold at mass merchandisers, department stores, home improvement stores, and online retailers including Amazon.com, modells.com, swagway.com, and target.com from September 2015 through March 2016. The units were sold for between $400 and $500. Consumers should immediately stop using these recalled products and contact Swagway to return their unit to receive a repair or a credit toward the purchase of a UL 2272 certified Swagtron T1 or T3 model. Swagway can be reached toll-free at 844-299-0625 from 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. CT Monday through Friday or online at swagway.com.
