Plain-English summary
Oliver Fiberglass Products and NuWhirl Systems are recalling approximately 6,400 Safe Step walk-in, hydro-massage bath tubs equipped with heated seats. The recall involves specific model numbers (LP2848, LP2851, LP2853, LP3153, or LP3255) and serial numbers ranging from 124423 through 131569 with prefixes HS, HSHY, HSHS, HSMB, or MBHS. These tubs were sold by various retailers, including CKH Industries, Galkos Construction, and Safe Step Walk-In Tub Co., between January 2014 and September 2014 for prices between $12,000 and $15,000.
The recall is due to a burn hazard. The tub's heated seat can become stuck in the "on" position. If a towel or other item is covering the seat of an empty tub, the seat can overheat. There have been 11 reports of the heated seat getting stuck on, including one instance where the seat overheated and became hot to the touch. No injuries have been reported.
Consumers should not place a towel or other item on the seat. They should contact Oliver Fiberglass at (888) 492-9423 or visit www.safesteptub.com to receive new instructions and warning stickers for the tubs. Oliver Fiberglass is also contacting tub owners directly.
