What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural defect in a gas appliance that has resulted in reported burns and property damage, meeting the criteria for a Severe rating (score 4) due to significant injury and property-damage reports.

Plain-English summary

Viking Range LLC is recalling specific models of freestanding gas ranges sold in the United States and Canada. The recall involves approximately 52,000 units in the U.S. and 8,300 in Canada. These ranges were sold in various colors and finishes, including stainless steel, black, and white, and feature different surface configurations such as all burners or burners with griddles and grills.

The hazard is that the ovens on these ranges can turn on by themselves without user input. This malfunction poses a burn hazard to consumers. Viking Range has received 75 reports of the ranges turning on by themselves, which includes three reports of burns and four reports of property damage claims.

Affected model and serial numbers are listed on a label located on the bottom of the control panel, the front of the oven cavity, or the inside of the left side panel. Consumers should only check these numbers when the range is not hot. The ranges were sold at retailers including ABT, Ferguson, Morrison, Pacific Sales, and PC Richard & Son from July 2007 through June 2014 for prices between $4,000 and $13,000.

Consumers should immediately contact Viking Range to schedule a free in-home repair. While waiting for the repair, consumers can contact the company for steps to avoid burn injuries. Viking Range can be reached toll-free at (877) 929-2581 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or via their website.
