What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural defect (handlebar failure) that can cause loss of control and injury. While no consumer incidents are reported, the hazard is a risk-of-harm product where injury has been reported during testing, fitting the 'High' severity criteria for risk-of-harm products.
Plain-English summary
Gibbs Sports Amphibians Inc. of Auburn Hills, Michigan, is recalling approximately 320 Quadski and Quadski XL amphibious vehicles. These high-speed vehicles operate as all-terrain vehicles on land and on water. The recall includes the one-seater Quadski and the two-seater Quadski XL.
The recall is being issued because the handlebar can fail while the vehicle is in operation. This failure can cause the operator to lose control of the steering and braking system, posing a risk of injury. No consumer incidents have been reported, but three reports of breakage during testing have been received, one of which involved injury to the neck of the test operator.
The affected vehicles were sold nationwide through Gibbs Sports Amphibians dealers from January 2012 through October 2014 for about $42,000. Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled vehicles and contact an authorized dealer for a repair at no cost. The HIN numbers for the recalled vehicles are printed on a plate located on the right rear corner of the vehicle.
