Discount School Supply is recalling approximately 3,700 Excellerations™ magnetic color sorting boards with cupcake cut-outs. These boards are used to teach color and sorting to young children and were sold online at Discountschoolsupply.com from January 2013 through March 2014 for about $36. The recalled boards are made of plywood, measure 16 inches wide by 12 inches high, and feature a clear plastic cover attached by rivets. Beneath the cover are about 60 multi-colored metal balls, each 1 centimeter in diameter, which children move using a wand with a magnet attached to a plastic cord.

The recall is due to the risk that the magnet in the wand can detach and the plywood backing can crack, releasing the small metal balls. These components pose choking and serious internal injury risks if ingested. Additionally, the surface paint on the metal balls contains levels of lead that exceed the federal lead paint standard. The company has received six reports of the plywood backing cracking and two reports of the magnet detaching, but no injuries have been reported.
