ESL and Interlogix Hard-Wired Smoke Alarms Recalled for Fire Detection Failure
CPSC recalls about 141,000 ESL and Interlogix smoke detectors in the U.S. because radio frequency interference may prevent them from alerting users to fires.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product (smoke detector failure) where injury has not yet been reported, which aligns with the 'High' severity criteria in the rubric.
Plain-English summary
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is recalling approximately 141,000 units of ESL and Interlogix brand 400 and 500 series hard-wired smoke detectors in the United States, with an additional 13,000 units in Canada. These detectors were manufactured by Fyrnetics Limited of Hong Kong, China, and imported by UTC Fire & Security Americas Corporation Inc. and Walter Kidde Portable Equipment Inc. The affected units are round, white, and measure 6 inches across by 2 inches high. They were installed in commercial buildings, schools, hotels, apartments, dormitories, and homes between March 2013 and February 2014.
The recall is due to a hazard where radio frequency interference can cause the smoke detectors to fail to alert consumers of a fire. No injuries or illnesses have been reported in connection with this defect. The recalled units have date codes ranging from 13084 through 14059, which correspond to dates between March 25, 2013, and February 28, 2014. The initials ESL, the date code, and specific model numbers are printed on a label on the back of the detector's cover and on the product packaging.
Consumers should immediately contact their security or fire system provider to determine if their units are included in the recall. If the units are affected, the provider will provide free replacement and free installation of new smoke detectors. Consumers should not take the alarms out of service until the replacement alarm has been installed. Only professional installers should remove and replace these units. For more information, consumers can contact Edwards at (800) 655-4497 or Interlogix at (855) 286-8889.
