The recalled units are round, white plastic disks approximately 4 1/2 inches in diameter with a three-level round metal disk in the center.
The recall is being issued because the heat detectors can fail to operate properly and may not detect the presence of fire. Chemetronics Caribe has received one report of a heat detector failing to operate in a field test, but no injuries have been reported as a result of their use. The affected units were sold nationwide by distributors of fire detection equipment from May 1994 through May 1997. Specific date codes stamped on the side of the recalled detectors include "0594" through "1294", "W1-Y95" through "W52-Y95", "W1-Y96" through "W52-Y96", and "W1-Y97" through "W22-Y97".
Consumers should stop using these heat detectors immediately and contact Chemetronics Caribe at (800) 496-8383 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. EDT, Monday through Friday, for a free replacement and installation arrangements. Other Chemetronics products, including the Stargard A Series, are not affected by this recall.
