Winco Recalls Contraband 24 Canister Shell Fireworks Kits Due to Burn Hazards

Winco Fireworks is recalling Contraband 24 kits because narrow tubes can cause shells to explode, posing burn and impact risks.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product (fireworks) where injury has been reported (minor burns and cuts), fitting the 'High' severity criteria for products with reported injury but no fatalities or severe structural defects.

Plain-English summary

Winco Fireworks International LLC is recalling approximately 4,500 Contraband 24 fireworks kits with canister shells and firing tubes. The kits were sold at Pyro City and other fireworks retailers from February 2014 to June 2014 for about $80. The product consists of 24 60-gram shells and four fiberglass firing tubes with wooden bases, packaged in a brown cardboard box.

The recall is due to a defect where the firing tubes in some kits may be too narrow, preventing the shell from dropping to the bottom when loaded. When fired, the shell can blow a hole in the tube or blow up inside it, posing impact and burn hazards to the user and bystanders. The company has received two reports of the tubes being too narrow, including one incident where a shell blew up in a tube, causing minor burns and cuts to the legs of a store employee.

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled fireworks kits. They should return the product to the place of purchase to receive a full refund.
