Summer Infant is expanding a recall to replace rechargeable batteries used in certain handheld color video monitors. The recall involves approximately 800,000 batteries, including about 58,800 units recalled in February 2011. The affected batteries are black, about 1 ½ inches tall by 2 ¼ inches wide, and marked with TCL on the lower right corner. They are identified by specific serial number prefixes such as JNN-S150A, JNS150-BA, and JNS150A.
The batteries can overheat and rupture, posing a burn hazard to consumers. Summer Infant has received 22 reports of overheated and ruptured batteries, which included incidents of smoke and minor property damage. The monitors were sold at mass merchants, online retailers, and independent juvenile specialty stores from about February 2010 through 2012 for between $150 and $350.
Consumers should immediately remove the battery from the monitor and contact Summer Infant for a replacement battery. The monitor can continue to be used on AC power with the power cord while waiting for the replacement.
