Design Ideas Recalls Rubber Ducky, Blowfish, and Splat Magnets Due to Ingestion Risk

Design Ideas is recalling approximately 26,900 miniature magnets in the shapes of ducks, blowfish, and splats because the small magnets can detach and be swallowed by children.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product where the hazard (intestinal obstruction, perforation, sepsis, death) is severe, but the source text explicitly states that no injuries have been reported, which limits the score to 3 per the rubric.

Plain-English summary

Design Ideas Ltd. is recalling approximately 26,900 miniature office and refrigerator magnets sold in the shapes of a duck, blowfish, and a splat. The recall involves the Design Ideas® and Neatlife® Rubber Ducky Magnets, and Design Idea® Blowfish and Splat Magnets. The products were sold in sets of four or six, with a small magnet affixed to the underside of the brightly colored plastic objects.

The recall is being issued because the small magnets can easily detach from the product. If swallowed, magnets can link together inside a child's intestines and clamp onto body tissues, causing intestinal obstructions, perforations, sepsis, and death. Internal injury from magnets can pose serious lifelong health effects. No injuries have been reported in connection with this recall.

The rubber ducky magnets were sold at Nordstrom's Rack stores, novelty and gift stores, book stores, and art stores nationwide from March 2007 through September 2013 for about $10. The blowfish magnets were sold at novelty and gift stores, book stores, and art stores nationwide from March 2007 through March 2011 for about $10. The splat magnets were sold at CB2 stores, novelty and gift stores, office supply stores, and art stores nationwide from November 2012 to February 2014 for about $10. Model numbers 3205121, 993205114, 3205122, or 3205078 are printed on the bottom of the packaging.
