Plain-English summary
Gree Electric Appliances of China is expanding its dehumidifier recall to include approximately 350,000 units sold in the United States and 2,700 units in Canada under the GE brand name. The recall covers 30, 40, 50, and 65-pint models manufactured between January 2008 and December 2011. These units were sold at Sam's Club, Walmart, and other stores nationwide and in Canada, as well as online at Amazon.com and Ebay.com, for between $180 and $270.
The recalled dehumidifiers can overheat, smoke, and catch fire, posing fire and burn hazards to consumers. Gree has received 16 reports of incidents involving the GE-brand units, including 11 reports of overheating with no property damage beyond the units and 5 reports of fires beyond the units associated with approximately $430,000 in property damage. This expansion follows a previous recall of 2.2 million dehumidifiers under 12 other brand names in September 2013, which involved more than 71 fires and $2,725,000 in property damage. No injuries have been reported.
Consumers should immediately turn off and unplug the dehumidifiers. They can contact Gree toll-free at (866) 853-2802 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or visit www.greeusa.com and click on Recall to receive a refund.
