GE Brand Dehumidifiers Recalled by Midea Due to Fire Hazard
Midea is recalling GE brand dehumidifiers sold at Walmart because a compressor component can short circuit, posing a fire hazard.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a fire hazard with one reported fire incident, which aligns with the rubric criterion for 'significant injury/property-damage reports' or risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported but a fire occurred.
Plain-English summary
Midea is recalling approximately 15,500 GE brand 30-pint portable dehumidifiers. The recall is due to a fire hazard caused by a component in the dehumidifier's compressor that can short circuit. The affected units are white plastic, measure about 19 inches tall, 13 inches wide, and 9 inches deep, and feature a front-loading water bucket with "GE" branding and digital controls on top.
The recalled dehumidifiers were sold exclusively at Walmart stores nationwide from March 2010 to December 2010 for about $170. The specific units involved have Model Number ADKW30LN, Serial Numbers beginning with AT1, DT1, FT1, or GT1, and manufacture dates ranging from January 2010 through April 2010. Midea and GE have received one report of a fire contained within the dehumidifier unit, with no other property damage or injuries reported.
Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled dehumidifiers and unplug them. They should contact Midea toll-free at (855) 861-2799 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or visit www.midea.com/us/ and click on Product Recall Info under the Support heading, for instructions on returning the unit for a free repair. Consumers should not return the recalled dehumidifiers to the retailer where purchased.
