Plain-English summary
LG Electronics Tianjin Appliance Co. of China is recalling approximately 98,000 30-pint portable dehumidifiers sold under the Goldstar and Comfort-Aire brand names. The recall involves white units with a red shut-off button, fan speed and humidity controls, and a front-loading water bucket. The model and serial numbers are located on the interior of the unit, visible after removing the water bucket.
The recall is due to a defect in the power connector for the dehumidifier's compressor, which can short circuit. This defect poses fire and burn hazards to consumers. LG has received 11 reports of property damage incidents involving arcing, heat, and smoke, including four fires that spread to the building structure and caused significant smoke and water damage. No injuries have been reported.
The affected dehumidifiers were sold nationwide at The Home Depot, Walmart, and Heat Controller Inc. from January 2007 through June 2008 for between $140 and $150. Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled dehumidifier and contact LG toll-free at (877) 220-0479 to determine if their unit is included in the recall. Consumers can return the unit to an authorized LG service center for a free repair.
