Plain-English summary
Nikon is recalling specific EN-EL 15 rechargeable lithium-ion battery packs that were sold with the Nikon digital SLR D800 and D7000 model cameras. The recall affects battery packs with lot numbers E and F, where the ninth character of the 14-digit lot number on the back of the pack is an "E" or "F". The model number "EN-EL15" and specifications "7.0V 1900mAh 14Wh" are also printed on the back of the affected units.
The battery packs can short circuit, causing them to overheat and melt, which poses a burn hazard to consumers. Nikon has received seven reports of incidents outside of the U.S. and Canada where the recalled battery packs overheated. No incidents or injuries have been reported in the U.S. or Canada.
Approximately 5,100 units were sold in the United States, 1,100 in Canada, and an additional 195,000 worldwide. The batteries were sold with the cameras at camera, office supply, and mass merchandise stores, in catalogs, and on various websites nationwide between February 2012 and April 2012 for between $1,200 and $3,000. Consumers should stop using the recalled battery packs immediately, remove them from the camera, and contact Nikon for a free replacement battery pack.
