Kraft Foods Global Inc. is recalling approximately 2.1 million packages of Tassimo espresso T Discs in the United States and 1.9 million in Canada. The recall involves Gevalia, Maxwell House, and Nabob brand espresso T Discs, which are plastic discs filled with coffee used in Tassimo coffee makers. The affected products were sold in packages of eight or 16 discs from August 2011 through February 2012 at various retail stores and online. Consumers can identify the recalled products by checking for codes ending in 11213 through 12020, printed on the foil lid and package side.
The recall is due to a burn hazard where the T Discs can become clogged and spray hot liquid and coffee grounds onto consumers and bystanders during or after brewing. There have been 21 reports of incidents involving hot liquid or coffee grounds spraying, including four reports of second-degree burn injuries. One incident involved a 2-year-old girl from Canada who received second-degree burns to her face.
