Plain-English summary
Hamilton Beach Brands Inc. is recalling about 14,000 Hamilton Beach classic chrome 2-slice toasters, model 22602. The recall is due to a fire hazard where the heating element can be energized when the toaster is first plugged into an outlet, even if the lifter is in the up or off position. This poses a risk if the toaster is near flammable items.
The toasters were sold at mass merchandisers and department, grocery, and home center stores nationwide from August 2011 through November 2011 for between $19 and $34. Some units were also sent to consumers as replacements for model 22600 toasters recalled in June 2011. The model number is printed on the bottom of the toaster, which features a chromed steel exterior and a front control panel with a rotary toast shade selector.
Hamilton Beach has received five reports of toasters being energized when first plugged in, but there have been no reports of injuries or property damage. Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled toasters and contact Hamilton Beach at (800) 672-5872 or visit www.hamiltonbeach.com to obtain a free replacement toaster.
