Toro Z Master ZRT Mowers Recalled Due to Operator Presence Switch Hazard
The Toro Company is recalling Z Master ZRT mowers because the optional deluxe seat's operator presence switch can activate the blade when the operator leaves, posing an injury risk.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product where injury has been reported (one foot laceration), but the source does not indicate fatalities or serious injuries that would meet the criteria for Severe or Critical severity.
Plain-English summary
The Toro Company is recalling approximately 3,700 Z Master ZRT mowers in the United States and 109 in Canada. These large commercial duty zero radius turn mowers feature 52-inch to 72-inch cutting decks. The recall involves specific model numbers 74264, 74265, 74266, 74267, 74274, 74253, and 74254 with serial numbers ranging from 260000001 to 280999999.
The hazard exists because mowers equipped with the optional deluxe seat have an operator presence switch built into the seat that can activate the mower when the operator vacates the seat. This poses an injury hazard from the blade to the operator and anyone in the vicinity of the mower. Toro has received one report of a foot laceration associated with this defect.
These mowers were sold at Toro dealers in the U.S. and Canada from September 2005 through January 2011 for prices ranging from $13,000 to $17,000. Consumers with the optional light gray deluxe seat should contact Toro to receive modification instructions. Consumers can perform the modification themselves or contact any Toro Dealer to have it completed for free.
