What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product where injury has been reported (burns and lacerations) but no deaths or serious injuries are documented, fitting the High severity criteria.
Plain-English summary
IKEA is recalling FÖRSTÅ coffee/tea makers in 0.4 and 1-liter sizes due to burn and laceration hazards. The product is a press pot featuring a handmade clear glass pot, a metal holder, and a black plastic top and handle. The recalled units have supplier number 20325, "IKEA," and "Made in China" etched on the bottom of the metal holder.
The hazard exists because pressure from the metal pot holder against the coffee/tea maker can cause the glass to break unexpectedly. IKEA has received one report in the U.S. of a glass coffee/tea maker breaking, with no injury reported. Additionally, IKEA received 19 reports outside the U.S. of the glass breaking, resulting in 12 reports of burn injuries from spilled coffee/tea and one report of a laceration injury.
Approximately 94,000 units were sold in the U.S. and 34,000 in Canada. The products were sold at IKEA stores nationwide from January 2010 through December 2010 for between $6 and $10. Consumers should immediately stop using the FÖRSTÅ coffee/tea makers and bring them back to any IKEA store for a full refund.
