Baby Matters Recalls Nap Nanny Recliners Due to Entrapment and Suffocation Hazards

Baby Matters LLC is recalling approximately 30,000 Nap Nanny® portable baby recliners due to hazards involving entrapment, suffocation, and falls. The recalled recliners include a foam base with an inclined indentation, a fitted fabric cover, and a three-point harness. The first-generation model is identified by the absence of "D"-rings in the foam base, while second-generation models feature "D"-rings and Velcro™ straps inside the cover.

Infants can partially fall or hang over the side of the recliner, even when the harness is in use. This risk is heightened if the Velcro™ straps are not properly attached to the "D"-rings or if the first-generation model without "D"-rings is used. Additionally, if the recliner is placed inside a crib, play yard, or other confined area contrary to instructions, an infant can become entrapped between the crib side and the recliner and suffocate. Placing the recliner on elevated surfaces also poses a risk of serious head injury if a child falls over the side.

CPSC is investigating a report of a 4-month-old girl from Royal Oak, Michigan, who died in a Nap Nanny® used in a crib. Preliminary reports indicate the infant was harnessed but found hanging over the side, caught between the product and the crib bumper. CPSC and Baby Matters are aware of one other incident where an infant became entrapped in a crib and sustained a cut to the forehead. The agency and the firm have received 22 reports of infants, primarily younger than 5 months, hanging or falling out over the side despite being harnessed, with one infant sustaining a bruise.

Consumers with first-generation models should stop using the product immediately and contact Baby Matters to receive an $80 coupon toward a new recliner with free shipping. Consumers with second-generation models should stop using the product until they obtain new instructions and watch an instructional video on the company's website to ensure the harness is properly fastened. The products were sold at toy and children's retail stores nationwide and online from January 2009 through July 2010 for about $130.
