Ski-Doo Snowmobiles Recalled Due to Drive Axle Failure and Ejection Risk
BRP is recalling about 18,000 Ski-Doo snowmobiles because drive axle cracks can cause track lockup, leading to rider ejection or loss of control.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (drive axle failure) with reported serious injury (broken femur) and a risk of death, meeting the criteria for a Severe rating.
Plain-English summary
Bombardier Recreational Products Inc. (BRP) is recalling approximately 18,000 Ski-Doo Model Year 2008 and 2009 snowmobiles. The recall addresses a defect in the drive axle assembly where cracks can develop in the welded joints, potentially resulting in complete breakage.
If the drive axle breaks, the snowmobile's track can unexpectedly lock. This can cause riders to be ejected from the vehicle or lose control, leading to collisions with bystanders, fixed objects, or other vehicles. BRP has received 20 reports of locked tracks, including one report of a broken femur and reports of minor injuries such as bruises.
Affected models include various MXZ, GSX, and Summit series vehicles sold at Ski-Doo dealers nationwide from June 2007 through September 2008 for between $7,000 and $12,500. Consumers should immediately stop using the vehicles and contact their local Ski-Doo dealer to schedule a free repair. BRP is sending direct notice to consumers with recalled snowmobiles.
