What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product where injury has been reported (lacerations requiring stitches), but no fatalities or severe injuries are documented, fitting the 'High' severity criteria for reported injuries without critical outcomes.

Plain-English summary

Swimways Corp. of Virginia Beach, Va., is recalling about 31,000 "Skippy" Pool Toys. The recalled products are rubber pool toys shaped like fish, available in blue, purple, or green, measuring 8 ½ inches long by 5 inches wide. They feature a loop of elastic tubing shaped like a tongue used to launch the fish across the water. The toys were manufactured in China and sold at mass merchandisers and independent pool supply stores nationwide from February 2007 through September 2007 for about $10.

The recall is due to a laceration hazard. The elastic tongue of the fish can break and forcefully come out, cutting users' hands during the launching of the toy. Swimways has received 24 reports of the pool toy breaking during use. There were five reports of injuries to children, including one requiring stitches to a child's hand and another where a child's thumb nail was ripped back from the nail bed.

Consumers should take the toy away from children immediately. To obtain a free replacement toy, consumers should contact Swimways toll-free at (888) 559-4653 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or visit the firm's website at www.swimways.com.
