Various Firms Recall Flashing Pacifiers for Choking and Strangulation Hazards
Multiple firms are recalling flashing pacifiers because the nipple can separate, posing choking and strangulation risks to children.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product (choking/strangulation) where the source explicitly states no injuries have been reported, fitting the High severity criteria.
Plain-English summary
Various firms are recalling flashing pacifiers and flashing pacifiers with whistles. The units are clear or colored purple, blue, pink, or green and feature five flashing LED lights. Some models include necklaces with beads or rainbow cords attached to handles. The products were sold in clamshell packages with warnings indicating they are for ages 6+ or 12+, or labeled as practical jokes.
The recall is due to the pacifiers failing to meet federal safety standards. The nipple can separate from the shield easily, creating a choking hazard. Some pacifiers were sold with necklaces that pose a strangulation hazard, and one necklace has beads that can come loose, posing an aspiration hazard. Although marketed for older children, the source notes they could be given to babies and cause serious injury or death. No injuries have been reported.
About 237,000 units were sold nationwide between January 2003 and September 2006 for between $0.55 and $13. They were distributed through novelty shops, toy stores, carnivals, amusement parks, and web retailers. Consumers should take these pacifiers away from young children immediately and dispose of them, or return them to retailers for a refund.
