Plain-English summary
Polaris Industries Inc. is recalling approximately 1,380 model year 2006 snowmobiles equipped with factory electric starts and about 1,940 electric start kits that could be installed on certain 2005 or 2006 models. The affected vehicles include specific 2005 and 2006 700 and 900 series models such as the Classic, Touring, Fusion, RMK, and Switchback. The model and serial number identification decal is located on the right side of the tunnel underneath the seat.
The recall is due to a manufacturing or installation defect where the fastener torque securing the starter motor to the engine crankcase may not have been accurately applied. An improperly torqued starter motor fastener bolt may become loose and fall out, allowing the bolt to interfere with the lower steering drag link. This interference could result in a loss of steering control for the consumer. Polaris has received 18 reports of incidents involving loss of steering ability, with one reported minor injury.
Consumers should stop using these vehicles immediately. Polaris is sending direct notice to affected consumers, who should contact a local Polaris snowmobile dealer to schedule a free repair. For more information, consumers can call Polaris toll-free at (800) 765-2747 between 8 a.m. and 12 midnight ET everyday, or visit the company's website at www.polarisindustries.com.
