Polaris Recalls 2006 Snowmobiles Due to Suspension Shock Tower Separation Hazard

Polaris is recalling about 2,700 model year 2006 snowmobiles because inadequate welding can cause front suspension shock towers to separate, leading to loss of control.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (suspension shock tower separation) that has resulted in a reported injury (broken collarbone), meeting the criteria for a Severe rating.

Plain-English summary

Polaris Industries Inc. is recalling about 2,700 model year 2006 FS Classic, FS Touring, FST Classic, FST Touring, and FST Switchback snowmobiles. The recall addresses a hazard where the right and left front suspension shock towers can separate due to inadequate welding during the manufacturing process. This separation can result in stiffer steering or the sudden failure of the shock mount, causing the rider to lose control of the snowmobile and crash.

Polaris has received eight reports of failure to the upper shock tower due to the inadequate weld. One of these incidents resulted in the driver losing control of the snowmobile and breaking his collarbone. The affected snowmobiles were sold at Polaris snowmobile dealers nationwide from February 2005 through March 2007 for between $8,400 and $9,900.

Consumers should stop using their snowmobile immediately and contact their Polaris dealer to schedule an appointment for a free repair. The dealer will install a kit that replaces the original shock towers with new versions. Polaris has directly notified registered consumers with units involved in this recall.
