What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product (lead toxicity) where injury has not yet been reported, which aligns with the High severity criteria in the rubric.

Plain-English summary

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is recalling silver-colored metal charms that were included as free giveaways in certain Shirley Temple movie DVDs. The charms, which come in shapes such as animals, hats, treble clefs, and lollipops, contain high levels of lead. Lead is toxic if ingested by young children and can cause adverse health effects. No injuries have been reported in connection with this recall.

The recalled charms were distributed in specially marked pink DVD boxes labeled "Bonus Charm Bracelet Inside" or "Bonus Charm Inside" from August 2005 through April 2006. The affected DVD titles include Curly Top, Heidi, Little Miss Broadway, Baby Take a Bow, Bright Eyes, Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm, Dimples, The Little Colonel, and The Littlest Rebel, as well as three Shirley Temple Collection volumes. The charms were sold in retail stores, web retailers, and via direct mail for approximately $15 for single DVDs and $30 for gift box collections. About 730,000 units were distributed by Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment.

Consumers should immediately take the recalled charms away from children. To receive a free DVD, consumers should contact Fox Home Entertainment toll-free at (877) 541-2229 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. PT, or visit www.dvdcharmrecall.com. Only the charms should be returned to the firm.
