Plain-English summary

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is recalling various styles of metal toy jewelry, including rings, necklaces, and bracelets, that were sold in vending machines. The recall involves approximately 150 million pieces of jewelry manufactured in India and imported by A & A Global Industries, Inc., Brand Imports, LLC, Cardinal Distributing Co. Inc., and L. M. Becker & Co., Inc.

The CPSC determined that some of this toy jewelry contains dangerous levels of lead, which poses a risk of lead poisoning to children. Young children may mouth or swallow these items, allowing lead to leach into their bodies. Lead poisoning in children is associated with behavioral problems, learning disabilities, hearing problems, and growth retardation. While CPSC has received one report of lead poisoning from a previously recalled product, no reports of injury or illness have been received for the specific products announced in this recall.

The jewelry was sold in vending machines located in malls, discount, department, and grocery stores nationwide from January 2002 through June 2004 for between $0.25 and $0.75. Consumers should throw away the recalled jewelry. For more information, consumers can contact the importers at (602) 636-3908 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday.
