Plain-English summary
Hirschberg Schutz & Co. Inc. is recalling approximately 2.8 million metal charms sold under the name "Charming Thoughts™." The charms, which are silver-colored with small loops and various shapes, were sold in packages of two to 12 pieces. They were marketed as decorations for items such as place cards, greeting cards, and scrapbooks, but can also be attached to necklaces and bracelets.
The recall is being issued because the metal charms contain high levels of lead, posing a serious risk of lead poisoning to young children. Lead poisoning in children is associated with behavioral problems, learning disabilities, hearing problems, and growth retardation. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) received a report of a six-year-old girl who mouthed these charms worn on a homemade necklace and developed elevated lead levels in her blood that may be related to the charms.
The recalled charms were sold at Michaels Stores, Recollections stores, and Hancock Fabrics stores between July 2002 and February 2005 for between $3 and $4. Consumers should immediately take these metal charms away from children and contact Hirschberg Schutz & Co. at (800) 651-0616 or via email at [email protected] to receive a refund.
