Plain-English summary
Tap Enterprises, Inc., doing business as Cummins Industrial Tools, is recalling approximately 11,300 Mini 2-Gallon Pancake Air Compressors. The recall is due to an undersized power cord that can overheat, creating a fire hazard. Additionally, improper assembly of the power cord strain relief component and improper routing of internal conductors can cause a shock hazard to consumers.
The firm has received 40 reports of compressors failing to work, including two incidents of smoke and fire. One incident resulted in $30,000 worth of property damage to a stand-alone garage. No injuries have been reported. The affected compressors were sold with yellow-, blue-, gray-, or silver-painted tanks. Item #2112 and "CUMMINS INDUSTRIAL TOOLS, AIR COMPRESSOR (OILESS), 110V.60Hz, 2 Gallon, Made in China" can be found on the motor housing.
The compressors were sold nationwide via mobile merchant sales, websites, and newspaper advertisements from June 2004 through March 2006 for about $50. Consumers should stop using the 2-gallon mini compressors immediately and contact Cummins for a refund of the purchase price, including shipping.
