Plain-English summary
Polaris Industries Inc. is recalling approximately 61,020 Model Year 2004.5 and 2005 ATVs, including Sportsman, Scrambler 500, Trail Boss, and Magnum 330 models. The recall was first announced in May 2005 and expanded in June 2005.
The recall is due to a defect in the Electronic Control Modules (ECM), which may fail and overheat. If this occurs, the excessive heat could cause a fire, potentially resulting in serious injury or death. Polaris has received 68 reports of the ECM overheating, but no injuries have been reported.
Affected ATVs were sold nationwide by Polaris dealers from August 2004 through February 2005 for between $3,799 and $7,699. Consumers can verify if their vehicle is affected by checking the model and serial number against the specific ranges provided in the official recall notice. Polaris has notified registered consumers directly.
Owners should contact their Polaris ATV dealer to schedule a free repair for ECM replacement. For assistance, consumers can call Polaris at (800) 765-2747 or visit www.polarisindustries.com.
