Plain-English summary
Polaris Industries Inc. is recalling select 2004.5 and 2005 model year Sportsman and 2005 model year Scrambler ATVs. The recall covers approximately 14,882 units, including the Sportsman 400, 500, 600, and 700, as well as the Scrambler 500.
The recall is due to a defect in the Electronic Control Modules (ECM), which may fail and overheat. If this occurs, the excessive heat could cause a fire, potentially resulting in serious injury or death. Polaris has received 26 reports of the ECM overheating, but no injuries have been reported.
Affected ATVs were sold nationwide by Polaris dealers from August 2004 through February 2005 for between $5,999 and $7,299. Consumers should contact their Polaris ATV dealer to schedule a free repair for ECM replacement. Polaris has also notified registered affected consumers directly.
