The recall is due to a defect where the plastic casing could crack if water enters the unit, causing the transceiver to malfunction.

If the transceiver fails to function properly after an avalanche, a buried victim may not be found in time to avoid serious injury or death. No injuries have been reported in connection with this recall. The affected units were sold through authorized Mammut dealers from August 2004 through November 2004 for about $300. The recalled transceivers are red and black with "Mammut" and "Barryvox" printed on the front. Specific serial numbers are listed in the battery compartment under the UPC code, and the units were shipped with an instructional CD and a box marked "Bonus CD Included."
