Plain-English summary
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is recalling approximately 3,000 units of the ORTOVOX S1+ Avalanche Transceiver. The device is a black flip-case beacon with green accent stripes, used to locate individuals buried in avalanches. The recall includes all transceivers manufactured between 2010 and 2014. The manufacture date is printed inside the battery door on the back of the unit.
The recall was issued because the S1+ hardware can fail, resulting in an inability to transmit a discoverable signal during an emergency situation. This failure can occur even when the unit appears to be powered on and functioning properly. No injuries have been reported in connection with this defect.
The transceivers were sold nationwide from July 2010 through April 2015 at outdoor specialty retailers, ski shops, and directly from ORTOVOX for about $490. The product was imported by Deuter USA of Longmont, Colorado, and distributed by Ortovox of Taufkirchen, Germany. Consumers should stop using the recalled transceivers immediately and return them to ORTOVOX for a free repair. For more information, consumers can contact Deuter USA toll-free at (877) 384-9252 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. MT Monday through Friday, email [email protected], or visit ortovox.com.
